Carol, the "teachings of the Catholic Church regarding culpability " does not affect the objective status of a morally relevant choice, but refers to whether an individual has committed by such choice a sin in a subjective sense, i.e. whether the three conditions referred to in the Catechism are met or not.

For example, your spreading an error about the Church’s teaching is a morally relevant choice, in this case objectively evil, but the fact that you, hopefully, wrote in an invincible ignorance, enables you to escape Hell.

My reading of Abp. Fisichella's article, as published in English on the Internet, is that his excessive preoccupation with scoring compassion points toward the girl who doesn’t actually need them – one cannot but be compassionate toward her – underlies a consequentionalist/proportionalists frame of mind which is incompatible with the Church’s teaching.

He only in passing makes mention of the two executed children as the “lives” which “were suppressed”, not as the two persons with rights to live equal to his own, and equal to the life of their mother.

Archbishop Fisichella forgets that an act of violence can never heal another act of violence. As a woman who has had an abortion, I can honestly say that this experience will stay with Carmen for the rest of her life, and will affect her future relationships. Archbishop Fisichella also forgets that in our world culture today, it is more important than ever for the Church to speak loudly and often about the Truth that she has been entrusted with, and which she has been charged to preach. The Church is under enough attack from the culture, it does not need it's own people attacking it. At the end of the day, Archbishop Fisichella needs to remember that Jesus came not only to love and forgive; he came with the sword of Truth which he knew would set "mother against daughter, daughter against mother; father against son and son against father." Jesus also spoke about judgement and hell. A fact people with the mindset of Fisichella find all too easy and convenient to forget.

dd is right, you are blind. We can never attempt to bring about a good through evil acts. This child, nutured, loved and supported would have been better off giving birth to these babies and giving them up for adoption. She has enough to live with going forward and now abortion has been added to her list of future sorrows.

What a perfect example of blind, convoluted thinking you express. I assert that you are a sincere person who "knows scripture" without a clue as to what it means. Bless you in your ignorance.

Archbishop Fisichella has rightly spoken about Carmen, 9 years of age, impregnated by being brutally and repeatedly raped. Rape is always an intrinsically evil act which must be spoken about and is affirmed in Veritatis Splendor by Pope John Paul II. Such violence must be spoken about. Frances' comment does not reflect a full understanding of the magisterial teachings of the Catholic Church regarding culpability which can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Thank the good Lord that Archbishop Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for Life has brought an understanding of the the Truth, who is Jesus Christ, through his deep compassion and mercy.

Not you nor anyone can make a decision like that and tell yourself that it is for her healing and giving her dignity. Like it or not those were her children and that abortion will affect her for the rest of her life. One man assaults her and wounds her physically, emotionally, and psychologically, and another man to fix things and make it all better??? kills her children. Do you really believe this will not affect her for the rest of her life? As difficult as it is God allowed it (the pregnancy) and He always brings something good out of bad. Killing innocent babies is no better than raping this poor child who was also innocent. So, what she has learned from you is that the innocent must suffer at the hands of others. Not only did she suffer but her children did too. This is a fact. What would have happened if you had been there for her and helped her to give birth to these children, you nor she will ever know, and no amount of reasoning on your part will ever prove that what you did was the right thing to do. Because you made a decision that only God has the right to make. (It is understood also, that you are wrong , her health was not in grave danger). But the fact that two wrongs do not make a right is indisputable that we know for a fact. How can we protect the innocent by harming the innocent?
